Apple TV has released the first trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Neuromancer, the seminal cyberpunk novel by William Gibson. The footage, debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, offers an initial look at the series' visual direction as it attempts to adapt a work long considered by critics to be "unfilmable."
Plot and Production Details
The series centers on Case, a disgraced hacker who previously had his central nervous system damaged by the Yakuza. His trajectory changes when he is recruited by a former military officer named Armitage and a street samurai known as Molly Millions. They offer to restore his ability to access cyberspace on the condition that he assists them in a high-stakes heist that spans space colonies and digital servers.
Production is led by showrunner Graham Roland, known for Jack Ryan, and director JD Dillard, who directed Sleight. The project also lists Drake as an executive producer. The trailer suggests a visual style that avoids an over-reliance on neon aesthetics, opting instead to focus on the grit of Gibson’s "Sprawl" setting.
A History of Failed Adaptations
The quest to bring Neuromancer to the screen has spanned decades, with numerous projects failing to gain traction. Most notably, director Vincenzo Natali announced an ambitious adaptation in 2010 that resulted in concept art but never entered production. Other previous attempts to adapt the material have been limited to a 1980s video game from Interplay, a BBC Radio play, and the 1995 film Johnny Mnemonic, which took significant creative liberties with Gibson's source text.
The current Apple TV production is slated to arrive on the platform in January 2027.
