Square Enix has officially pulled back the curtain on the upcoming tank job heading to Final Fantasy 14 in the next expansion, Evercold. Following months of speculation sparked by director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) during fan events, the newest addition to the MMORPG's tank roster will feature Gunshields.

Quick Facts

  • Expansion: Evercold, launching next year
  • New Additions: A physical ranged job and a tank job
  • Tank Weapon: Gunshields (teased previously via a Rhitahtyn Sas Arvina shirt hint)
  • Role Type: Main tank job, focused on taking damage and countering enemy strikes

Gunshields Confirmed for the New Tank Job

During the keynote presentation at Berlin's Fan Fest, an updated trailer for Evercold confirmed that the upcoming tank job utilizes Gunshields. While early teasers during North America's Fan Fest led players to speculate based on the A Realm Reborn antagonist Rhitahtyn Sas Arvina—who wielded dual shields with attached cannons—the weapon class is now officially confirmed for player characters in the upcoming release.

According to updates shared across the Fan Fest events, the new tank job is designed specifically as a Main tank. Square Enix is shifting tank roles to more distinctly separate Main and Off tank responsibilities, making this new addition well-suited for absorbing heavy hits and retaliating against incoming damage.

Broader Changes Coming in Evercold

The introduction of the Gunshield tank and an unrevealed physical ranged job are part of a larger slate of updates arriving with Evercold next year. Square Enix has announced plans for a complete combat overhaul alongside adjustments to game systems aimed at respecting player time more effectively. Alongside these system changes, the game's active player base recently climbed past 1 million active characters ahead of the expansion's launch.
