Why Japanese GTA 6 Codes Expire
Reports from Power Unlimited columnist Genki confirm that physical copies sold in Japan contain a code that expires 170 days after release. On May 8, 2027, those launch-edition physical copies will effectively become worthless.
This limitation stems from the Japan Payment Services Act. The regulation forces companies that sell prepaid goods or services to deposit at least half the value of each item sold with the Japan Legal Affairs Bureau to protect consumers from scams or business closures. Companies can bypass this requirement if prepaid codes expire six months after issuance. At 170 days, the GTA 6 code expiration sits just under that six-month threshold.
What's Included in Physical Boxes
Rockstar Games' support documentation clarifies that pre-ordered physical copies include one code granting access to the full digital game and the pre-order cosmetic pack. Standard physical copies purchased at stores without a pre-order also contain a single code, minus the cosmetic pack. Additionally, the $100 Ultimate Edition does not offer a physical code-in-a-box version.
