Industry Perspectives on Physical Media

The move to a digital-only distribution model for one of gaming's biggest titles arrives as the industry grapples with the transition away from physical media. Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, addressed the topic during San Diego Comic-Con 2026. While Houser noted he does not have a strong personal preference regarding physical versus digital formats, he suggested that companies should accommodate consumer demand.

"I don't know that I care, but if people want that, I think companies should provide it," Houser said. He also pointed to the technical advantages of digital distribution, noting that the ability to issue updates and address software issues has been beneficial for overall game quality.

Lazlow Jones, who previously worked with Houser at Rockstar and now works with him at Absurd Ventures, offered a split perspective. While acknowledging the tactile satisfaction of inserting a disc into a console, Jones noted the convenience of digital downloads, particularly for portable gaming on devices like the Steam Deck during travel.

A Changing Landscape

The conversation around the viability of physical media has intensified following recent industry developments. Sony confirmed that it will cease production of new physical game discs for PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. This shift has prompted public commentary from various industry figures, including Hideo Kojima, Yoko Taro, and Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, regarding the implications of an increasingly digital-only future for video games.
