When Gamescom Opening Night Live arrives next week, not every publisher airing a trailer will have paid for the privilege. Geoff Keighley recently clarified the selection process for the annual showcase, explaining that editorial value can earn developers free trailer placement alongside paid promotional spots.
Quick Facts
- Event: Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, happening next week.
- Paid Trailer Rates: A 60-second trailer slot costs approximately $120,000 based on previous reporting.
- Editorial Selection: Games selected for their news value or independent status can secure a spot without paying.
- Confirmed Appearances: Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Gears of War: E-Day, and the upcoming Witcher 3 DLC are confirmed for the show.
Editorial Value Versus Paid Ads
While the showcase operates primarily as a marketing event, Keighley noted that the curation team hand-picks specific trailers based on editorial merit. This includes independent games created by small teams of three or four people that the production team wants to support, as well as major world premieres.
"One of the things that's important I think to all of us is that there are games that get selected for editorial value in the show," Keighley stated during a pre-brief. "There's also a lot of independent games that we take."
Keighley likened the showcase placement to physical exhibition space at the Koelnmesse where Gamescom takes place, which can cost up to $235 per square foot. While paid 60-second trailer spots run around $120,000—and up to $1 million for three-minute slots at The Game Awards—games bringing genuine news value have a pathway to bypass these fees.
What Qualifies for Editorial Consideration?
According to the showcase host, trailers featuring announcements or brand-new reveals carry higher news value than games launching just weeks later. Titles that are already widely known and releasing immediately function more as traditional advertisements rather than surprise reveals, making them less likely to qualify for free editorial placement.
Confirmed appearances for the upcoming event include Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Gears of War: E-Day, and upcoming Witcher 3 DLC. Because Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled to launch shortly after the event, it remains to be seen whether it falls under editorial selection or standard advertising placement.
