Compulsion Games has officially transitioned back to an independent studio following the completion of a management buyout. The developer, known for its work on South of Midnight, had operated as an Xbox first-party studio for several years prior to this change.
Changes to Ownership and Publishing
CEO Guillaume Provost confirmed that the studio has regained ownership of its intellectual properties. Publishing rights are currently in a transfer period, moving back to the studio from its previous platform holder. Provost noted that there is an ongoing transition phase as these rights shift, and that purchasing the studio's games directly supports the team during this period.
Future of the Studio
Following the buyout, the studio is evaluating its path forward to ensure it remains self-sustaining. Provost indicated that the team is focused on maintaining its current staff and culture, noting that the decision to pursue independence was driven by a desire to keep the group together.
While some staff members departed when the studio's future was uncertain, Compulsion Games is currently in the process of meeting with various parties to secure its long-term stability. The studio intends to proceed with development on projects that were already in progress, including South of Midnight, while selecting future ventures that align with the team's creative goals.
