Microsoft’s long-rumored disc-to-digital conversion system, internally codenamed “Project Positron,” could be arriving on Xbox consoles as early as next week. The feature, which has been under internal testing, is designed to allow players to convert physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs into permanent digital licenses linked to their Microsoft accounts.

Quick Facts

  • System: Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs only (Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles are excluded).
  • License Management: Digital entitlements are revoked if the physical disc is activated on a different account.
  • Functionality: Converted games gain support for Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere.

Speculation regarding an imminent launch intensified following a delay in the latest Xbox Insider program update. While Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently committed to a bi-weekly update schedule, this week’s update failed to materialize. Brad Rossetti, head of the Xbox Insider program, suggested the delay would be “worth the wait,” a sentiment bolstered by Windows Central journalist Jez Corden, who simply stated: “Positron commeth.”

How the Conversion Works

According to reports, the system is designed to preserve the second-hand game market rather than render it obsolete. The digital license created through the conversion process is not permanent if the physical media changes hands. If a user sells or lends their disc to another person who then activates it on a different Microsoft account, the original owner’s digital entitlement is automatically revoked and transferred to the new user.

Once a game has been successfully converted, it functions exactly like a title purchased directly from the digital storefront. This includes integration with Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere, providing players with more flexibility for their physical collections.

The Future of Physical Media

This initiative is widely viewed as a strategic workaround for Microsoft’s next-generation hardware, currently codenamed “Project Helix.” Industry speculation suggests the upcoming console may launch without a physical disc drive entirely, making a disc-to-digital bridge essential for users with large legacy collections.

The move comes as the industry continues to shift away from physical media. Sony has already confirmed plans to cease the production of physical PlayStation games starting in January 2028.

In addition to Project Positron, Microsoft is reportedly testing several other features for the Xbox Insider program, including the ability to utilize cloud gaming while console updates download, the integration of Xbox 360 achievements into Game Hubs, and support for expanded 15-character Gamertags.
