The solo developer behind Pokemon Gamma Emerald has announced he is stepping away from the project following the game's recent early access release. UndreamedPanic, who spent 18 months working 12-hour days on the fan-made Generation 3 remake, stated on social media that he “can’t wait to be done with this game” due to community feedback.
Development Scope and Community Response
UndreamedPanic built the game's systems, 3D models, user interface, and music independently. The development involved creating 384,000 frames of animation, which were subsequently compressed into sprite sheets. Despite this workload, the developer expressed frustration that some players have categorized the project as a simple “mod” or “rom,” a label he described as dismissive of the work involved.
The developer also addressed criticism regarding the game's performance. A recent optimization push successfully reduced the game's RAM requirements from approximately 12GB to under 4GB, enabling it to run at a locked 60 FPS on the base LCD model of the Steam Deck.
Current Status
Despite the technical milestones, the developer has indicated he will not be addressing further bug reports for the time being. “I am not gonna fix bugs or look at them for a while, I REALLY need a break from this project,” he stated, citing the difficulty of satisfying community expectations.
