Play! Pokémon has announced a major shift for its competitive landscape in 2027, confirming that Pokémon Unite will no longer be part of the official Championship Series or the Pokémon World Championships. The team-based title, which has been a staple of the event since 2022, saw over $1 million in prize money during the 2026 season.
New Tournament Structure for Pokémon Unite
Rather than disappearing from the competitive scene, Pokémon Unite is moving to a new, standalone tournament structure. The Pokémon Unite Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo will serve as the primary destination for top-tier play. Online Regional Qualifiers are slated to begin in November 2026, with the final in-person tournament scheduled for late March 2027 in Tokyo, Japan.
Up to 32 teams will compete in the Tokyo event, earning their spots through the Regional Qualifiers. While the exact prize pool for the new circuit remains unannounced, The Pokémon Company has confirmed that prize money will be available throughout the qualifiers and the final tournament.
VGC Device Policy Limits Mobile Play
In addition to the changes for Pokémon Unite, the 2027 VGC (Video Game Championships) season will see stricter hardware requirements. The Pokémon Champions software, which became the official VGC platform in 2026, will now require participants to use Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 family consoles.
Although Pokémon Champions launched on iOS and Android in June 2026 with cross-platform support, the new policy does not list phones or tablets as eligible tournament devices. This effectively mandates that any competitor currently playing on mobile must move to a Nintendo console to participate in the 2027 Championship Series. Play! Pokémon noted that a separate device policy will be established for the 2027 World Championships, leaving open the possibility that rules for the final event could differ from the wider circuit.
