A newly announced title for Steam is putting a chaotic twist on the mob movie trope of body disposal. Shady Job, an upcoming co-op game, tasks up to four players with the grim objective of hauling a body bag to the roof of a construction site to bury it in concrete.
Much like titles such as Peak and Dear Passengers, the game emphasizes cooperation and navigation through hazardous environments. However, the job is complicated by the fact that the “corpse” inside the bag is very much active. Throughout the journey, the body will attempt to escape, potentially damaging the environment and physically hindering players.
Gameplay Mechanics and Hazards
Players aren't just walking from point A to point B. The construction site is filled with verticality, requiring teams to build makeshift bridges and navigate platforms while managing a struggling load. The developers have integrated several mechanics to keep the situation volatile:
- Hostile Cargo: The body becomes more aggressive the rougher it is handled, with the ability to knock players from ledges.
- Destructible Environments: Players can smash through windows and walls to find new routes to the top.
- Traversal Tools: The game includes tools such as a plunger gun, which players use to climb buildings, maneuver through the site, and rescue teammates.
- Environmental Challenges: The route to the roof involves navigating cranes, moving platforms, and collapsing structures.
Playtest Information
While Shady Job does not currently have a firm release date, developer Gaze in Games has announced a playtest window for July 24-25.
Sign-ups for the playtest were briefly overwhelmed by high demand. The studio noted in a blog post that they are considering closing sign-ups temporarily to ensure they can manage the influx of participants and provide a smooth experience for those testing the game. The developer described this measure as a temporary step to handle the large number of requests.
