Square Enix has officially confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, the sixth expansion for the long-running MMORPG, will launch in January 2027. Following recent reveals at the Anaheim and Berlin Fan Festivals, the developer provided an extensive look at the new content, which shifts the story away from the Dawntrail narrative to begin the new Godless Realms Saga.

Quick Facts

  • Release Window: January 2027
  • Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows, Mac, and Steam
  • New Job: Bastion (Tank), wielding dual greatshields called Skyltborg
  • Level Cap: Increasing from 100 to 110

Setting the Scene in the Fourth

The expansion transports the Warrior of Light to the Fourth reflection of the Source, a world defined by a frozen wasteland. To survive the extreme conditions and the monsters that arrived with the ice, the population has taken to the skies in massive airships, specifically the Realmship of Water (Naglfar) and the Realmship of Fire (Hringhorni). Players will explore these vessels, including the city of Fargarth, as they attempt to reclaim the frozen ground below.

Gameplay and System Overhauls

Evercold introduces a significant split in the battle system: Reborn Mode and Evolved Mode. While Reborn Mode maintains the current combat structure, Evolved Mode is being designed to offer stronger, more distinct job identities in response to long-standing player criticism regarding job homologation.

The expansion also implements a more flexible main scenario structure. After a certain point in the narrative, players can choose the order in which they visit specific areas. Additionally, an Auto Content Balancing system will adjust duties, field enemies, party matching, and drops based on the player's current character level.

New Jobs and Customization

The Bastion tank job is the first of two new additions arriving in Evercold. Playable only in Evolved Mode, Bastion starts at level 90 with quests beginning in Limsa Lominsa. Its gameplay centers on the Skyltborg, which function as both defensive shields and aetherial artillery. Square Enix plans to reveal the second new job—a physical ranged DPS—at the Tokyo Fan Festival in October.

Players can also expect deeper character customization, including a new color picker and refined options for facial features like eyes and lips. A new system for Customizable Action Animations will allow players to modify the visuals of their general and job-specific actions.

Raid Content and Companion Updates

The endgame will feature the EVANGELION – Ghosts of Desire alliance raid series, featuring guest design work by Mahiro Maeda. Additionally, an eight-player raid series titled Beyond the Lifestream, developed in collaboration with the Final Fantasy VII Remake team, is set to launch. Other additions include a new difficulty tier for eight-player raids, a new Ultimate raid, and updates to PvP and Duty Support.

For those who prefer solo or duo play, the Chocobo Companion system is scheduled for an overhaul in Patch 8.1. This update will allow players to call their Chocobo into dungeons, enabling two-player parties supported by the bird companion.
