PlayStation's recent announcement regarding the future of physical media has triggered a significant backlash. The company confirmed its intent to discontinue the production of physical game discs beginning in 2028, a move that will shift the platform toward an entirely digital-only ecosystem in roughly 18 months.

The reaction has been swift, with fans and industry professionals expressing shock and frustration. This climate has led to the creation of at least 15 separate online petitions on platforms like Change.org, all urging Sony to reconsider the decision to phase out physical discs.

The Growing Call for Consumer Choice

The most prominent of these campaigns is led by Jade Pearce, owner and CEO of Canadian retailer PNP Games. Her petition has already garnered over 9,000 signatures. In her statement, Pearce highlighted the irony of the situation, referencing Sony’s marketing during the 2013 E3 event, where the company gained significant favor by championing the right for players to trade, lend, and own their games—concepts that are inherently tied to physical media.

"A disc is a real game you own. You can lend it, trade it, resell it, gift it, collect it, or pass it down to your kids. A box with only a download code is not the same thing. It is a digital license in plastic packaging. You do not own it."

Beyond the loss of ownership, the petitions emphasize the economic impact on local retailers and the risks associated with digital-only access. Critics of the move point to instances where purchased digital content has been pulled from stores or removed from user libraries, arguing that removing physical alternatives grants platform holders complete control over whether a user can access their purchased software.

Will Petitions Change Sony's Strategy?

While the volume of public outcry is mounting, the effectiveness of these petitions remains uncertain. Sony has historically reversed controversial decisions, such as its 2021 attempt to close the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita digital storefronts. However, moving away from physical media is a significantly larger, structural change for the company's business model.

As of now, the movement shows no signs of slowing down, with supporters spanning across Europe, North America, and beyond. For now, the future of physical collecting on PlayStation remains in a state of uncertainty as the 2028 deadline approaches.
