If you have spent any time looking at screenshots of The Guild: Europa 1410 you might be forgiven for expecting a life simulation RPG. The game, a reboot of 4HEAD’s 2002 classic Europa 1400: The Guild certainly looks the part. Developed by the team behind Last Train Home the game drops you into a recreation of Kuttenberg—a city familiar to fans of Kingdom Come: Deliverance—complete with wattle and daub houses, muddy roads, and a bustling population.
However, after spending time with the Steam demo it becomes clear that this is not a game about wandering through a medieval world. It is a game about mastering a ledger.
A Board Game in Disguise
The first thing to understand about Europa 1410 is that it is fundamentally a turn-based dynastic strategy game. While the world features a day-night cycle and weather conditions, the actual gameplay is largely abstracted into menus. Following characters through doors isn't a matter of walking; you click a door handle icon to enter a sub-menu. The "living, breathing" city is largely set dressing for a high-stakes management sim where the main objective is ensuring your business remains profitable while navigating the local tax laws.
You aren't controlling a character in the traditional RPG sense. Instead, you are managing a dynasty. You will spend your time filling grid-based shop inventories, upgrading facilities, and tweaking sliders to keep your business in the black. It’s less about the tactile experience of medieval life and more about managing the economy of a burgeoning metropolis.
Systems and Strategy
Despite the focus on menus, there is a surprising amount of mechanical depth for players who enjoy systems-heavy strategy. The game offers a range of dynastic options reminiscent of Crusader Kings 3. You can:
- Seek political office by buttering up residents to become mayor or bishop.
- Pass strange laws and deal with the subsequent social fallout.
- Hire and manage staff using a slider-based system.
- Surveil your neighbors using a spyglass once you have upgraded your home.
- Engage in an investigation sub-game to gather evidence against rivals in court.
Location also plays a key role in your success. If your character operates out in the fields to gather resources like timber, you become reliant on transport carts to reach the market. The more territory those carts cover, the higher the risk of robbery, adding a layer of logistical danger to your supply chains.
Is It Worth Your Time?
If you approach The Guild: Europa 1410 expecting a modern-day life simulator, you may find the experience jarring. The high-fidelity visuals almost do the game a disservice, as they create an expectation of organic exploration that the underlying menu-driven gameplay doesn't deliver. However, if you view it as a strategy title—a "ye olde Microsofte Excelle" with dynastic stakes—the demo offers an absorbing, if dusty, experience. It is a game that wants you to focus on your ledgers and ensure your shipments arrive on time, regardless of how beautiful the city outside your window might look.
