Spyro: A Realm Beyond Officially Announced for 2026 Release

Spyro: A Realm Beyond has been officially confirmed as the next major entry in the beloved platforming franchise, with developer Toys for Bob stating the title is currently in production for a 2026 release. The game will launch across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch, marking a return for the studio to the iconic purple dragon after their work on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

Spyro: A Realm Beyond official announcement details

The announcement of Spyro: A Realm Beyond arrived during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, where a cinematic trailer provided the first look at the upcoming adventure. Following the event, studio leadership at Toys for Bob clarified the direction of the project and their motivations for continuing the series. Associate Creative Director Lou Studdert and Studio Head Paul Yan spoke to the press regarding their decision to prioritize this project over other potential intellectual properties owned by Microsoft.

For the development team, the choice to return to this specific franchise was influenced by their history with the character, specifically their contributions to the Skylanders series and the 2018 remaster collection. Studdert noted that the studio identifies with the underdog narrative often associated with the protagonist, viewing the character's persistence against significant obstacles as a reflection of their own studio culture. This shared connection made the decision to pitch a new entry to Microsoft a natural progression for the team.

Why did Toys for Bob choose Spyro: A Realm Beyond?

Development news surrounding the project highlights that the studio had been planning a return to the series for years. According to Studdert, the team held a long-standing ambition to advance the character's story following the success of the Reignited Trilogy. The decision to move forward was described as a moment where the timing aligned, allowing the team to pursue a project they felt passionate about.

Paul Yan emphasized the business and community-driven factors that supported the development of Spyro: A Realm Beyond. The commercial performance of the previous remaster, which surpassed 11 million copies sold, provided the studio with the confidence that a dedicated audience remained waiting for a new installment. Yan explained that the studio frequently encountered inquiries from fans at various industry events, which served as a consistent reminder of the market interest in the series.

Looking Toward the Future of the Franchise

While the industry has seen a resurgence in platforming titles, such as the recent releases of Astro Bot and Rayman Legends Retold, Toys for Bob maintains that their focus remains on delivering high-quality experiences that fit their studio's expertise. Yan clarified that the transition into this project is not a shift in strategy but rather a continuation of the work they have performed for years. The team believes there is a persistent need for these types of experiences in the current market.
