One of the more persistent curiosities in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 involves a simple piece of city infrastructure: the main fountain in Kuttenberg. As players explore the early 1400s recreation of Bohemia, they might hear protagonist Henry wonder aloud, "A fountain? Where does the water come from? Here in the middle of the city."
YouTuber Any Austin recently set out to find an answer to Henry’s question. After searching the immediate vicinity of the fountain and finding no obvious source within the city walls, Austin scouted the surrounding countryside. His search initially hit a snag when he discovered an aqueduct flowing away from the town rather than into it, complicating the mystery.
Following the History of St. Adelbert's Spring
The developers at Warhorse Studios may have left the answer hiding in plain sight by utilizing the real-world geography of Kuttenberg. The town features a well-documented historic site known as St. Adelbert's Spring, located southwest of the fort. While the spring is not explicitly marked on the in-game map, players can locate it by navigating to its actual coordinates.
Although the in-game representation of the spring appears to flow toward a local stream rather than the city, further exploration of the nearby forestry revealed an aqueduct. To confirm if this was the intended link, Austin spoke with Warhorse Studios communications director Tobias Stolz-Zwilling and a group of designers, who brought in historical consultant Joanna Nowak to weigh in.
While none of the team could provide a definitive technical breakdown, they confirmed that the intended design is for the aqueduct to connect the spring to the fountain. Nowak noted that the team is composed of "freaks" for such historical details, admitting that the sheer volume of minute choices woven into the game has made it difficult for them to remember the specific "how and why" behind every feature.
A Broken Feature Becomes a Community Meme
The mystery of the fountain doesn't end with its water source. According to Stolz-Zwilling, Henry’s tendency to obsessively bring up the fountain is the result of a technical oversight. "The cooldown there is for Henry barking, 'Hmmm I wonder why that fountain is here' was broken and was never fixed," Stolz-Zwilling explained.
Rather than patching the issue, the studio leaned into the player reaction. "It turned out to become a community meme," Stolz-Zwilling said. "So when we were about to fix it, we decided not to."
The inclusion of such minor, hyper-specific details is part of the studio's broader ambition for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Warhorse Studios has made it clear that they are aiming to become the "new kings" of the RPG genre with their latest release and their upcoming open-world Lord of the Rings project.
