PlayerUnknown Productions has officially announced the end of development for its survival title, Prologue: Go Wayback. Citing funding considerations, the studio is moving forward with a smaller team to continue working on its proprietary technology, Melba. Rather than removing the game from storefronts, the team has released a final update and made the title free for all PC players.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Status: Development halted
  • Price: Free (formerly paid)
  • Refund Deadline: August 17, 2026
  • Platform: PC

A Final Hurrah for the Wilderness

The final update adds a new trail system to the game's world, allowing players to navigate between cabins, shelters, meadows, and cliffs. While these paths are designed to connect key areas, the developers have included settings to adjust connection distances, though higher settings increase the risk of encountering unexpected dead ends.

Two new items have also been introduced: a handheld weather monitor—which can be upgraded to provide details like temperature and humidity—and a waterproof spray to protect gear such as paper and matches. Alongside these additions, the team has implemented a series of quality-of-life improvements, including refinements to cooking, liquid handling, visual lighting and fog effects, and audio consistency.

Accessing Developer Tools and Modding

For those interested in exploring the game's inner workings, PlayerUnknown Productions has left the game files unencrypted. While the team noted they lacked the resources to provide official mod documentation, the community is free to modify the files. Additionally, a developer build is now available via the Steam library under the 'game versions and betas' menu. This version includes a special menu accessed via the '=' key, allowing users to spawn items, manipulate weather, change the time of day, and use flight or teleportation tools.

Refund Information

Players who previously purchased Prologue: Go Wayback are eligible for a full refund. The studio has confirmed that Steam support is prepared to grant these requests without issue. Applications must be submitted through the standard PC gaming refund process by Monday, August 17, 2026. Players who choose to refund the game can still re-add it to their library for free afterward.

Brendan 'PlayerUnknown' Greene addressed the community in a statement, expressing pride in the team's accomplishments and gratitude toward the players. "The games industry has been in a tough spot for a while, and we're not alone in the struggle to find funding," Greene wrote. "I'm so very proud of what our team accomplished and truly regret we couldn't finish the journey we began together."
