A sentient metal has turned against humanity, and it is up to the heroine Zura to fight back in SHADE Protocol, an upcoming metroidvania that has quickly captured significant community interest. Developed by Little Legendary Studios, the project recently launched a Kickstarter campaign that saw immediate success, hitting its $40,000 funding goal in just 25 minutes.
As of mid-June 2026, the campaign has secured $238,621 from 3,538 backers. Kendall Kinones, CEO and Game Director at Little Legendary, noted that the team chose crowdfunding to maintain a community-first development pipeline, ensuring fan feedback remains at the forefront of their work.
Combat and Code-Based Mechanics
The core gameplay of SHADE Protocol centers on a dynamic combat system where players mix melee attacks with specialized musical instruments. Players wield weapons like the Twilight Spear, Sunrise Great Axe, and Midnight Chakram, each providing unique combat and exploration utility. A key feature of the experience is the ability to swap between DAWN and SHADE modes to adapt to different combat scenarios.
The game also features the "UNISON" system. Since the game world exists as code, players can interact with this underlying structure to manipulate events and alter the outcome of conflicts, effectively shaping the fate of different factions. Defensive play is equally important; players can use parries and counters to restore "Echo," an energy source required to fuel powerful instrument-based attacks.
Platform Support and Steam Deck
For PC players, the game is currently listed with Linux system requirements on Steam, suggesting a native build or a focus on compatibility. Regarding handheld support, the studio has explicitly stated their intent to support the Steam Deck.
"We will work towards full compatibility with the Steam Deck! ... It is part of our main objectives to ensure SHADE Protocol plays and performs well on all portable platforms we port it to."
While the team notes that full optimization for portable hardware is a goal for later in the development cycle, their commitment to the platform is clear. With the current momentum from their successful crowdfunding efforts, Little Legendary Studios is now moving forward to turn their vision of a world transformed by the SHADE virus into a reality.
