A long-requested feature is finally coming to Fallout 76. Bethesda has launched a new update on the Public Test Server (PTS) that allows players to take their camp pets out of the backyard and onto their journeys across the Appalachian Wasteland.

For years, companions have been a staple of the Fallout series, but Fallout 76 has largely limited interactions with animal companions to the player's home base. Bethesda describes this evolution as a “major new feature” that is set to roll out to the full game later this year. For now, players with access to the PTS can test how these companions handle the open world.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Available Pets: Cats, dogs, radhogs, and deathclaws.
  • Pet Commands: 'Stay' and 'follow' via the emote wheel or direct interaction.
  • Combat Status: Pets currently cannot fight or take damage.
  • Restrictions: Pets cannot enter raids, shelters, or swim underwater.

How the New Pet Companion System Works

If you have an existing pet at your camp, you can bring them along by opening your Pip-Boy's 'stat' menu and selecting the new 'pets' tab. This version of the feature is specifically designed for “focused testing on pet navigation.” Consequently, your companions will not attack enemies, nor will they take damage during this testing phase.

Bethesda has confirmed that this is only the first incarnation of the system. Future updates will allow players to level up their pets for combat purposes. While your furry friends can accompany you almost anywhere indoors or outdoors, Bethesda noted they are currently unable to swim underwater and cannot be brought into raids or shelters.

Weapon Balancing and Legendary Changes

Beyond the pet updates, the latest patch notes include significant changes to gear and weapons. Unique items in the game world have been updated to feature at least three legendary mods and a special effect. Players can now modify these equipped items or add a fourth legendary star if they have the necessary materials. Additionally, the Scrip cost for swapping out legendary mods has been fixed, meaning it will no longer increase over time.

Weapon balancing also sees some shifts:

  • Lever Action Rifle: Now holds an extra round in each clip.
  • Brotherhood Recon Rifle: Crafting restrictions have been removed, and the recipe is now available via the Recon Scope in the Distant Thunder activity.
  • Fancy Weapons: The Fancy Single Action Revolver and Fancy Pump Action Shotgun have been converted into weapon skins. If you own these items, they will be replaced with standard versions featuring the new designs.

Bethesda is encouraging players to explore the world with their pets and report any navigation issues. A second phase of the PTS is expected later this year, which will introduce the remaining content and enable combat capabilities for your companions.
