The official Xbox Player Voice site is becoming an unlikely battleground for labor relations. A new suggestion, titled "End studio closures and stop the cycle of layoffs," has gained significant traction, racking up approximately 1,300 supporters in just 24 hours. While the platform is typically reserved for feedback on game features or requests for new titles, it is now being used to challenge the company's recent restructuring strategy.
The initiative is being shared by a union representing Bethesda employees. These workers were heavily impacted by the recent wave of job cuts, which saw 3,200 staff members laid off across various divisions, including Activision, Blizzard, King, Mojang, Obsidian, id Software, and Xbox Game Studios. The movement argues that the current strategy of mitigating losses through headcount reduction is harming both the workforce and the gaming community.
A Pattern of Studio Closures
The petition highlights a broader trend that has seen over 10,000 layoffs at Xbox within the last two years. Several studios have either been shuttered or faced severe instability, including Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Studios. Beyond these, the union notes that projects at studios like Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory have seen their futures jeopardized.
A major point of contention for both fans and workers is the lack of transparency. The petition specifically calls out the recent handling of Ninja Theory. After the studio showcased a new game at a recent Xbox event, news emerged that it was facing closure or a sale. It was later revealed that the game's announcement may have been intended to make the studio more attractive to potential buyers, a practice that the union describes as damaging to consumer trust.
Demanding a Change in Leadership Strategy
The suggestion outlines six core demands aimed at Microsoft's management:
- Transparency for Players: Stop showcasing games from studios that the company intends to sell or close.
- Keep Teams Together: Implement a two-year moratorium on layoffs and end studio closures.
- Realistic Profit Expectations: Move away from the "Microsoft Accountability Margin" that constrains development.
- Trust the Developers: Engage in good-faith negotiations with unions.
- Accountability: Cease executive bonuses during periods of layoffs.
- Invest in People, Not AI: Prioritize human expertise over unpopular technologies like AI.
The fallout from these decisions is already visible in the company's output. Reports indicate that teams working on Fallout 76 and Elder Scrolls Online have been hit by the ZeniMax and Bethesda layoffs, despite Xbox's expressed desire to produce more games in those franchises. Additionally, Obsidian Entertainment has reportedly lost between 60 and 70 developers, further complicating the studio's capacity to deliver on its projects.
As the petition gains momentum on the Xbox Player Voice site, it remains a clear signal of the growing friction between the developer base and the leadership overseeing the company's massive studio portfolio.
