From Toy Trains to Rail-Bound Skateboarding
The core concept of Denshattack!—described by the developers as “Tony Hawk but you’re a train”—originated from a simple, absent-minded moment with a small Japanese toy train. After prototyping the idea on a finger skate, the team realized the concept had genuine potential. While the idea of a train performing an ollie initially sounds bizarre, the developers leaned into the challenge of balancing the impossible with the physics of a heavy machine.
“Every trick needed to balance two completely opposite ideas: the fantasy of doing something impossible, and the satisfying feeling of something incredibly heavy moving through the world,” the team explained. By focusing on momentum and rhythm rather than traditional free-roaming steering, the game captures the flow-state energy seen in classics like SSX and Jet Set Radio.
Reclaiming the Tracks
Beyond the trick-based gameplay, Denshattack! tells the story of Emi, a character navigating a dystopian society. The abandoned railway lines act as a sanctuary for a subculture of non-conformists who have reclaimed these spaces to express themselves through the outlawed sport of train-skating. The environment spans a variety of settings, including massive Japanese cities, meadows, volcanoes, and even ocean-side tracks.
Players can expect to customize their ride as they outmatch rival gangs and work to take down a shady megacorp. By blending the high-speed energy of games like Sonic with a trick-focused scoring system, Denshattack! aims to turn the perceived limitation of moving on tracks into a unique strength, allowing players to focus on timing and style as they chain together impossible combos.
Denshattack! is available now as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning your progress carries over between Xbox consoles and PC. It is also accessible via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
