Bethesda Game Studios has stated that its development roadmap for The Elder Scrolls 6 remains unchanged, despite recent reports suggesting that widespread layoffs at Xbox would disrupt the project. The studio's confirmation arrived via an email response to creator MrMattyPlays, which was published on July 22, 2026.

Quick Facts

  • Game Status: Bethesda claims the The Elder Scrolls 6 roadmap is "unaffected" by recent restructuring.
  • Staff Reductions: Approximately 440 Bethesda and Zenimax employees were included in the 3,200 total redundancies across Xbox-owned studios.
  • Project Pipeline: Bethesda has announced four new Fallout games, with Fallout 5 confirmed to be in pre-production.
  • Legacy Projects: The studio is currently working on optimizations for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

Conflicting Reports on Development

Earlier in July, multiple Bethesda staff members told IGN that the layoffs would have a "substantial and cascading effect" on the production of The Elder Scrolls 6. This stands in direct contrast to the studio's official correspondence with MrMattyPlays, where they explicitly stated, "No, the roadmap is unaffected."

The impact of the restructuring is already visible elsewhere within the company. The team behind The Elder Scrolls Online recently announced that their previously shared roadmaps would be shifting due to the staff cuts. When asked about the potential for similar delays at the main studio, Bethesda maintained that their internal planning remains intact.

Communication Strategy Shift

In the same communication, Bethesda addressed why they have recently bundled several major announcements together, including the reveal of four new Fallout titles. The studio noted that they are aware of fan discourse online and decided to move away from individual, fragmented announcements.

"All of our fans and plenty of creators have been asking for us to lay out our roadmap for a long time. As bits of info or announcements come out individually, they get lost in the larger picture of all we're doing as a studio. So, we felt it was best to do it all at once and paint a clear picture for everyone."

Bethesda clarified that this change in communication approach was a decision made by the studio and was not mandated by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. While the studio maintains that the roadmap is secure, the internal tension between official statements and the reality of 440 layoffs within the Zenimax and Bethesda divisions continues to be a point of concern for observers.
