A sequel to the arcade racer Wreckreation has been officially announced. Titled Wreckreation 2, the title is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and other platforms by a newly-established studio, When Tides Turn.
When Tides Turn appears to be comprised of the same development team responsible for the original Wreckreation. Despite the first game's critical reception, which saw issues with handling and a lack of depth in its open-world design, the team is returning to the franchise with a focus on refining the core experience.
Quick Facts
- Title: Wreckreation 2
- Developer/Publisher: When Tides Turn
- Primary Focus: Emphasis on chaotic arcade racing over the previous "Live Mix" world-editing feature
- Playtests: Early PC playtests are planned for Patreon supporters
Refining the Arcade Experience
The announcement trailer suggests a move away from the heavy focus on the "Live Mix" feature, which allowed players to edit the open world and create custom challenges in the original. Instead, Wreckreation 2 appears to prioritize traditional arcade racing mechanics. The developers have cited a more Burnout-style approach to the driving action, though the final feel of the handling remains to be tested.
While the first game was criticized for feeling half-baked, the developers are seeking community involvement early in the development cycle. Players interested in testing the game can sign up through the studio's Patreon page to gain access to upcoming PC playtests, providing direct feedback as the title progresses toward its eventual release.
