Chinese indie publisher Astrolabe Games has announced a formal commitment to continue producing physical editions of its PlayStation 5 titles. The company released an “A-Go Manifesto” confirming it will maintain a disc-based release strategy for all eligible projects until Sony halts manufacturing, currently scheduled for January 2028.
Understanding the Commitment
Astrolabe Games, the publisher behind titles such as BlazBlue Entropy Effect X and Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog, stated that this policy is intended to “safeguard developers’ creations.” The publisher noted that it intends to continue this physical release support “till the last day” of Sony’s current manufacturing window.
The move comes as physical media faces significant industry headwinds. Recent data indicates that only seven physical PS5 titles managed to exceed 100,000 sales in the US and UK during the first half of 2026. Because Sony requires publishers to commit to minimum order quantities—often reaching into the thousands of units—this strategy represents a notable financial risk for a niche indie publisher.
Upcoming Physical Releases
The publisher has confirmed its immediate slate of physical titles will continue as planned:
- Gurei: Scheduled for release later in 2026.
- Fall Up: Scheduled for release in early 2027.
Astrolabe Games acknowledged that some titles may only be available in select territories and that the strategy remains subject to any future changes in platform holder policies. While Sony has indicated that some capacity for re-orders may exist beyond the 2028 cutoff date for games initially manufactured before that deadline, the current industry shift remains heavily focused on digital distribution.
