It has now been five full days since Sony last posted on its primary social media channels, excluding YouTube. As of Monday, July 6, 2026, the company’s accounts on X, Facebook, Bluesky, and Instagram remain completely abandoned following the highly controversial announcement that it intends to stop manufacturing physical games in 2028.

This prolonged radio silence is significantly longer than the 72-hour hiatus the company took earlier this year following the closure of Bluepoint. While the manufacturer has continued to update the PlayStation Blog, those posts are dominated by user comments expressing frustration and anger regarding the end of disc-based media.

The Growing Backlash on Social Platforms

The reception to the news has been overwhelmingly negative. On X, the company’s official announcement was hit with multiple community notes. One note aimed at clarifying the nature of digital ownership read: “Digital purchases grant a revocable license to access content, not ownership. Sony recently removed hundreds of purchased StudioCanal movies from libraries due to licensing.”

While Sony has maintained a presence on YouTube, it has been largely limited to trailers submitted by third-party publishers as part of pre-existing marketing agreements. These videos have been met with a barrage of negative comments focused entirely on the 2028 physical media cutoff. Other social platforms, such as Instagram, were flooded with pleas from users begging the company to reconsider, with many commenters stating that the end of physical discs signals the end of their loyalty to the brand.

Limited Engagement and Continued Silence

Despite the ongoing firestorm, Sony has not addressed the controversy outside of the initial announcement. The silence is particularly notable given that the company usually shares routine updates, such as the PlayStation Plus Essential lineup, via its social feeds. Currently, that information is only available through the PS Blog.

Even when third-party marketing has forced some activity, it has been inconsistent. For example, a gameplay trailer for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls featuring Iron-Man was released on the game's official account but was notably absent from PlayStation’s own channels. Given the intensity of the current backlash, it appears unlikely that the company will return to normal social media operations until at least after the current holiday weekend, and it remains to be seen how the firm plans to address the persistent resistance from its player base.
