Capcom's upcoming Onimusha: Way of the Sword is making a significant change to a long-running series staple. The puzzle boxes, puzzle cubes, and decoder containers that have appeared in every mainline game are officially gone in the new PlayStation 5 title.

Quick Facts

  • Game: Onimusha: Way of the Sword
  • Platform: PlayStation 5
  • Developer/Publisher: Capcom
  • Change: Classic puzzle boxes removed in favor of environmental puzzles

Why Capcom Dropped the Puzzle Boxes

Speaking in a recent preview interview with Game Informer, director Satoru Nihei confirmed the absence of the intricate containers. While the boxes historically rewarded players with equipment and items through head-scratching challenges, Nihei explained that the team wanted to adjust the flow of the game.

“As you observed, it’s not really the same kind of puzzle elements we had like usual, like the puzzle boxes. We have puzzle elements in the actual stage, and we’ve introduced those as a way to break up the action,” Nihei stated.

How New Stage Puzzles Work

Rather than solving self-contained cube puzzles, players will encounter environmental riddles integrated directly into the levels. Game Informer's preview highlights a specific sequence involving ornamental masks and shafts of light used to determine a correct sequence, offering a more organic experience that keeps players moving forward between combat encounters.

Combat remains the primary draw of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, but the development team recognizes the need for pacing variety. By weaving puzzle elements into each stage, Capcom aims to give players moments to think without grinding the action to a halt.
