Microsoft has announced its plans to introduce an Xbox disc-to-digital program that allows console owners to convert their physical game discs into digital versions. The announcement follows Sony's decision to end PlayStation disc manufacturing for all games released after January 2028.

How the Digital License Transfer Works
According to details shared via Xbox Wire, players can insert an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S disc into their system to claim a digital entitlement. Once claimed, the digital version functions like any standard digital edition, granting access to features including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S discs offer a single revocable digital license tied to the console where it was claimed. While the physical disc remains playable after transfer, claiming the digital license on another system will revoke it from the original user.
Microsoft noted that "while not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come."
