id Software has officially addressed concerns regarding its future following the recent wave of Xbox layoffs. Despite speculation that the legendary developer was being scaled down to function as a "support studio," the team has explicitly denied these claims.
In a statement released on July 10, 2026, the studio confirmed that while it was impacted by the broader industry layoffs, the resulting changes were distributed across various teams. According to government documents, 136 positions were cut at the Texas-based developer this week.
Current Studio Size and Philosophy
Addressing the rumors head-on, id Software clarified that its workforce remains comparable to its size during the development of DOOM (2016). At that time, the studio employed approximately 200 people. The company emphasized that it retains the necessary personnel to continue creating the games and technology for which it has been known over the past 35 years.
"We still have the crew we need to build the games and tech we're known for. The team today is about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016). We have always had a flat studio where everyone is a maker, and we will remain true to that philosophy moving forward."
Industry Context
The denial comes amidst a difficult week for Xbox, which confirmed 3,200 total job losses across its divisions. While the company has not closed any studios, these cuts represent the first phase of an ongoing restructuring effort, with an additional 1,600 job losses projected to follow.
id Software concluded its statement by focusing on internal support for affected staff members and confirmed that it is still planning to attend QuakeCon this August.
