PlayStation's Santa Monica Studio is officially continuing the action-adventure franchise with a brand-new game starring Kratos. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, game director Cory Barlog confirmed that the studio is developing another entry for the series, which will arrive after the upcoming spin-off God of War Laufey.
Quick Facts
- New Kratos Game: Confirmed to be in development by Santa Monica Studio, following the events of God of War: Laufey.
- God of War Laufey Release Date: Launches on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027.
- San Diego Comic-Con Reveal: Announced by head of creative Cory Barlog during an SDCC panel.
What to Expect From God of War Laufey
Barlog did not share specific details about Kratos' next standalone project during the panel. However, he stated that the upcoming game ties directly into the events of God of War Laufey. That prequel-adjacent adventure focuses on Faye (Laufey) as she journeys to the afterlife of the gods, known as the Everywhen.
In Laufey, the protagonist discovers that the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk, forcing her to fight opposing gods. According to Barlog, Faye's standalone journey hints at potential future directions for the franchise, including possible exploration of entirely new mythologies such as Egyptian and Tibetan gods, following Kratos' previous history through Greek and Norse pantheons.
Recent Franchise Additions
The announcement arrives alongside a busy period for the PlayStation franchise. Kratos' most recent mainline appearance was in 2022's God of War Ragnarök. Earlier in the year, Sony Santa Monica and Mega Cat Studios released God of War Sons of Sparta, a prequel featuring a young Kratos as the playable lead. Additionally, a remake of the original God of War trilogy is currently in development, though specific details remain sparse.
