Techland has officially confirmed that Dying Light: The Beast will no longer be released on PlayStation 4. The studio announced the cancellation today, citing the technical limitations of last-gen hardware as the primary reason for the decision.
This news directly impacts owners of the Dying Light 2 season pass. When Dying Light 2 originally launched, the season pass promised two pieces of post-launch DLC. While the first expansion arrived on both PS5 and PS4, The Beast—which eventually evolved into a standalone product—will not be making the jump to older consoles.
Quick Facts
- Game: Dying Light: The Beast
- Platform Cancellation: PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
- Refund Status: Eligible users will be provided with a refund
- Reason: Technical constraints of last-gen hardware
In a social media statement, Techland explained that the decision was not made lightly. The team noted that Dying Light: The Beast was built from the ground up to take full advantage of current-generation hardware, and attempting to port the open-world experience to older systems would have compromised the quality of the final product.
“This was not a matter of choosing to leave those platforms behind,” the studio stated. “Rather, it reflected the technical realities of development and our commitment to delivering the best possible experience.”
While Ultimate Edition owners on PS5 retain access to the standalone release, those who purchased the season pass specifically for access on PS4 are now being offered a path to a refund. Techland has apologized for the change in plans, acknowledging the frustration for players who were waiting to continue their journey on last-gen hardware.
This is not the first time a project in the series has faced such a shift. The original Dying Light was famously planned for PlayStation 3 before being cancelled to ensure a more robust launch on the PlayStation 4.
