Sohei Niikawa, the creator of the Disgaea series, has publicly criticized Sony’s recent announcement that it will cease manufacturing physical game discs starting in January 2028. Speaking at Anime Expo, the veteran developer argued that the company’s decision focuses purely on corporate metrics while ignoring the cultural and personal significance that physical media holds for the PlayStation community.
The Value of Physical Keepsakes
Niikawa emphasized that for many players, physical copies are more than just a means to run software. He noted that these objects act as keepsakes and memories, allowing fans to display their collections or even have physical cases signed by creators at events. By moving toward a digital-only future, Niikawa believes Sony is failing to consider the emotional bond between players and their games.
"If they’re going to go as far as eliminating physical packages, they may as well eliminate the hardware too," Niikawa told Noisy Pixel. "A television would be enough. Why would you need the console? If you’re going to get rid of physical games, you may as well go all the way."
Industry Context and Declining Sales
The transition away from physical media comes amid a broader industry shift toward digital distribution. Recent sales data for the PlayStation 5 indicates a downward trend for boxed software, with reports showing that only seven PS5 titles managed to sell over 100,000 boxed copies across the UK and US markets recently.
While Niikawa acknowledged the business logic behind the decision, he expressed concern that the industry is prioritizing spreadsheet numbers over the culture of gaming. The move to end disc production by 2028 marks a significant pivot for the platform holder, effectively signaling the eventual end of the physical PlayStation era.
