When the upcoming PC action RPG Monster Fantasy was revealed last week, it didn't take long for the comparisons to start. Developed by the Chinese studio JOTOYO, the title has faced significant backlash from fans of Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise, with many claiming the project leans too heavily on the popular series.

The criticism centers on the game's combat footage, which features players taking on massive monsters in a manner that many viewers feel is indistinguishable from Capcom’s work. Accusations have even extended to the game’s monster and player animations, with some observers suggesting that assets may have been lifted directly from the industry giant. Others have pointed to the game's musical score, alleging that elements of the iconic Monster Hunter theme have been replicated.

JOTOYO Responds to Plagiarism Claims

"Monster Hunter is indeed one of our sources of inspiration, and our core creators are big fans of the series," the developer stated.

JOTOYO admitted that the combat demonstrations shown in the initial trailer were likely to remind players of Capcom's franchise. However, the studio maintained that the reality of playing the game will be distinct from the current footage. "Once players actually try the game, we believe they will find that the overall experience is quite different," the team added.

Focusing on Life Sim Elements

To differentiate Monster Fantasy from its clear inspiration, JOTOYO highlighted gameplay pillars that go beyond the hunt. The studio explained that the core loop is intended to be broader than just combat, focusing on a "fantasy world where, beyond hunting and combat, players can truly immerse themselves." This includes activities such as building villages, enjoying a relaxed lifestyle, and interacting with NPCs.

Despite the pushback, the developer confirmed that the feedback has been heard. JOTOYO acknowledged that the initial trailer caused confusion regarding the game's identity and confirmed they are currently "adjusting and improving the design" in response to the community's concerns.

As the project continues development, it remains to be seen whether these adjustments will be enough to distance the title from its reputation as a "Monster Hunter clone" or if it will face the same scrutiny recently seen with titles like Palworld.
