Store Access Changes Start This August

It has been a difficult month for Sony, and the company is now facing further backlash following a decision to restrict access to the Crunchyroll online store. Starting in August 2026, the shop will be placed behind a paywall, limiting purchases to those subscribed to specific membership tiers.

To buy merchandise moving forward, you will need to be on the Mega (~$13.99) or Ultimate (~$17.99) subscription plans. If you are currently on the Fan (~$9.99) tier, you will be locked out of the store entirely. In preparation for this transition, Crunchyroll is offering a 50% discount on select items for all members throughout the remainder of July.

Quick Facts

  • New Policy: Access to the Crunchyroll store requires a Mega or Ultimate subscription starting in August 2026.
  • Affected Users: The Fan ($9.99) tier will no longer have access to the store.
  • Promotion: A 50% discount on select items is available for all members through the end of July.

Sony's Justification

Sony claims the move is designed to prioritize committed fans and better manage limited edition inventory. In an official statement, the company noted: “The new store captures the excitement of convention-exclusive merchandise: collectibles, curated drops, and limited-release products inspired by the anime series you love.”

The decision comes as Sony continues to face scrutiny regarding its business practices, including the recent announcement that it will cease manufacturing physical PlayStation games in 2028. While some have suggested that gating access could theoretically help mitigate issues like scalping for highly limited items, the store currently houses a broad catalog of general products, including manga and comics, making the restriction a contentious move for the wider community.
