ZeniMax Online Studios has moved to reassure players that The Elder Scrolls Online remains a priority following the widespread layoffs across Microsoft’s gaming division. While the studio confirmed that the game's content roadmap will undergo adjustments, developers have stated that the project is not heading toward maintenance mode.
Quick Facts
- 379 total staff were laid off across ZeniMax Media Inc. and the Cockeysville, MD office.
- Developers confirmed the current team size for The Elder Scrolls Online is now comparable to the 2015–2018 era.
- The studio is currently working on an updated content roadmap for the game.
Studio Commitment and Team Size
The reassurances came after a difficult week for Bethesda and its parent company, Microsoft. Following a memorandum from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma regarding a "reset" of the gaming business, which includes 1,600 immediate job cuts and another 1,600 over the next year, Bethesda staff received word that the company must refocus on its strongest franchises to ensure sustainable growth.
Despite the reduction in headcount, key members of the Elder Scrolls Online team, including associate design director Jason Barnes and associate director of community management Jessica Folsom, addressed community concerns during the ESO Tavern event in Germany. They emphasized that the studio is still dedicated to the game. According to reports from the event, the team is currently at a staffing level similar to when the studio produced the well-received Wrothgar and Summerset expansions.
Future Roadmap and Bethesda Strategy
Kevin Gbolie of the ESO team confirmed on the official forums that the studio's primary goal remains the delivery of quality content. "The plan is still to deliver great content, and we will hopefully have an update soon," Gbolie wrote, adding thanks for the community's support during a transition period that has caused significant anxiety across the Bethesda organization.
The shift in strategy, as outlined by Bethesda boss Jill Braff, moves the company away from a model centered on independent studio planning. Instead, Bethesda is shifting toward a consolidated approach that focuses resources on its strongest franchises. Sources have indicated that ZeniMax Online Studios is expected to support this new model by collaborating more closely with Bethesda Game Studios, potentially assisting with the development of The Elder Scrolls 6.
This sentiment mirrors recent messaging from Doom developer id Software, which also faced significant staff reductions. Like the ESO team, id Software leadership has insisted that despite the loss of approximately half their staff, the studio remains capable of producing high-quality games at its current size.
