Valve has stepped in to clear up confusion surrounding the Steam Machine reservation and waitlist system, assuring prospective buyers that nobody is skipping ahead in line.

In a post on Steam published on July 29, 2026, the hardware team explained that they are currently sending out purchase order emails daily to users on the reservation list. While a fair amount of users have expressed confusion over how the queue operates, Valve reiterated that everyone currently in the reservation queue will get the option to purchase their hardware by the end of this year.

How Regional Waitlists and Queues Work

Addressing reports of users moving from a waitlist to the reservation list and receiving purchase options ahead of others, Valve explained that reservation queues and corresponding waitlists are handled strictly on a per-product, per-region basis. Because demand varies, these queues move at different speeds depending on the specific region and hardware variant.

In regions where Valve has already reached the end of the initial reservation queue, they have begun inviting users from the waitlist. However, the company acknowledged an administrative hiccup in that process:

"We unintentionally skipped a step with this group by automatically sending the option-to-order email; moving forward, anyone who comes off the waitlist will first receive a message from us confirming you've been added to the reservation queue and can expect an option-to-purchase email sometime after that."

Valve emphasized that waitlist access only triggers when a regional reservation queue runs out entirely. No waitlist user is leapfrogging current reservation holders. For players waiting on their hardware, purchase opportunities remain tied strictly to regional demand, with the broader rollout still on track to reach all current queue members before the year is out.
