Rising hardware manufacturing costs driven by ongoing RAM shortages, trade wars, and tariffs have placed unprecedented strain on the console market. Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox have all raised hardware prices considerably over the past year, with PlayStation also announcing plans to halt physical game disc production in 2028.

Despite these mounting pressures, Unity Technologies CEO Matthew Bromberg remains optimistic about the future of console gaming. Speaking to The Game Business, Bromberg described the current market climate as wacky and unprecedented, noting that hardware is under genuine cost pressure because components have grown more expensive rather than cheaper over time.

However, Bromberg maintains that these cost pressures are temporary. He expressed confidence that great console entertainment will continue to be consumed in massive quantities, explicitly highlighting Grand Theft Auto as a driving force that will prove the platform's enduring strength.

Industry Challenges and Long-Term Outlook

The current hardware market is heavily impacted by component shortages fueled by the propagation of AI data centers and an increase in memory-hungry devices. Compounded by US tariffs implemented by the Trump Administration, these increased costs inevitably trickle down to consumers. There are also demographic shifts, with younger gamers not replacing older demographics at the same rate as in previous generations.

Despite these headwinds, Bromberg views the platform as vibrant. He predicts that hardware costs will eventually come down and that the industry will develop games capable of attracting younger consumers over time. Looking ahead over the next decade, Bromberg anticipates a renaissance of engaging game development that will surpass the previous ten years, suggesting that the best years of the business lie directly ahead.
