Today's Star Is is a new free 2D spaceship labyrinth game developed by Toby Alden, known for his work on the precision platformer Love Eternal. Designed with daily releases in mind, the title challenges players to navigate tight spaces while managing tricky physics and environmental hazards.
Gameplay and Mechanics
Players control a tiny, unarmed spaceship utilizing skittish, Lunar Lander-style spin-and-thrust handling. The core objective requires flying through a labyrinth of spiked surfaces to collect a reluctant star hidden in a crevice. Hitting regular walls causes no damage, but touching spikes results in instant destruction, and the concentration of spikes increases near the end of the layout.
The star itself introduces a physics challenge. Attached via a short-ranged, hold-the-button tractor beam, the star swings like a wrecking ball, catches on corners, and bounces unpredictably when the beam is disengaged. Direct contact with the star also destroys the player's ship. Complicating matters further is a roaming Space Invader creature that sleeps inside a designated hunting ground marked by dashed lines; entering this zone triggers an aggressive pursuit where the creature passes through solid surfaces.
Platforms and Availability
Players have infinite lives and frequent checkpoint flags to mitigate the high difficulty. Completed levels record scores on an online leaderboard. Today's Star Is is available to play directly in a browser or as a download for Windows and Mac on Itch.io, with developer Toby Alden intending to release a new level every day.
