Directed by former CD Projekt Red developers, the game places players in the shoes of Coen, a medieval vampire fledgling working to save his abducted family from a rival vampire within a strict 30-day timeframe.
How Time Mechanics and Tooth Trading Work
Despite the 30-day deadline, time progression in The Blood of Dawnwalker is structured around chrono-locked segments. Time advances only when you make specific choices or trigger specific events during exploration. However, managing Coen's vampire nature is critical; if he becomes too thirsty, he may end up attacking non-player characters.
Players can also directly alter the game's time limit by engaging in a dental temporal economy. By collecting teeth from fallen enemies, bandits, and cadavers, you can trade them to creature NPCs called the Sanzhana—chubby, moth-like beings with blue skin who harvest enamel in rings of red mushrooms. In exchange for teeth, the Sanzhana grant time-bending effects that adjust your remaining schedule.
Speaking to IGN, creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz explained the reasoning behind the mechanic: "They allow you to play with the time limit, because there are a lot of myths around pixies where they get to do some time-bending stuff. And for us, since our game is so heavily revolving around the time system, this was something cool to play around with."
