Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick predicts the gaming industry will shift toward a "commercial streaming mode" within the next three years. Speaking during the company's latest investor call, Zelnick outlined a vision where low-latency connections allow devices previously unsuited for high-end gaming to function as viable platforms.

Impact on Hardware and Accessibility

Zelnick addressed concerns regarding the rising costs of gaming hardware, noting that while expensive components like RAM are currently a hurdle, they do not necessarily function as a headwind for the company's business. Instead, he proposed that streaming technology offers a path to reach players in regions currently limited by access to high-end hardware.

"If you believe in streaming, and to be clear, we really do... I think we'll be in commercial streaming mode within three years," Zelnick said. He suggested that this technology could effectively "10X the installed base" by enabling users with low-capability, low-resolution mobile devices to access the same experiences as those on dedicated consoles or PCs.

The Technical Outlook

Acknowledging past industry challenges with latency, Zelnick attributed his optimism to ongoing developments in infrastructure. He pointed to "enormous advances in hyperscaler networks"—large-scale cloud services capable of scaling to demand—and the integration of edge network technology as the primary drivers that differentiate the current landscape from previous, less successful attempts at cloud gaming.

Despite this focus on streaming, Zelnick clarified that Take-Two is not betting the company's future solely on this shift. He noted that while streaming provides a new opportunity for growth, players will likely continue to utilize home hardware, and the company remains focused on delivering experiences for its existing markets.
