Brothers Joe and Andrew Fender, the developers behind the indie hit DEVOUR, have announced that their upcoming project, Sunset Summit, will arrive on August 21, 2026. Published by Future Friends Games, the title shifts away from the horror genre of the creators' previous work to offer a first-person co-op climbing experience for PC players.

What is Sunset Summit?

Sunset Summit is a chill yet challenging group climbing game designed for one to eight friends, though it also supports offline solo play. Players navigate regular checkpoints along multiple routes to the top, aiming to reach the summit before sunset. The developers describe the project as prioritizing fun over frustration, drawing inspiration from titles like PEAK while introducing both serious mechanics and more lighthearted elements.

Players have access to a variety of conventional and unconventional tools to aid their ascent and help their teammates. Equipment ranges from standard climbing axes and ropes to item delivery drones, walkie talkies for proximity chat, and bizarre items such as pogo sticks, umbrellas, pills, and cans of beans. The game also features a realistic in-game camera allowing climbers to snap pictures during their journey.

Development Background

According to co-developer Joe Fender, work on Sunset Summit began in 2021 following the launch of DEVOUR as a way to branch out into new territory. By 2023, burnout and uncertainty regarding market interest in a first-person co-op climbing game led to doubts about finishing the project. However, the subsequent success of similar titles like PEAK provided the reassurance needed to complete development on this mix of co-op mechanics, climbing, and megastructures.

A playable demo is currently live on Steam ahead of the August release date. The developer notes that the demo functions properly with Proton for SteamOS and Linux users.
