Developer Attu Games has released Scarlet Deer Inn, a new 2D adventure game on PC that has quickly drawn attention for an unorthodox visual approach: every single sprite frame is physically stitched in cloth before being brought into the engine.
Quick Facts
- Platforms: PC (Steam), with console versions set to follow.
- Developer: Attu Games.
- Reception: Sitting at 87% positive user reviews on Steam following launch.
- Art Style: An embroidered dark medieval folk tale with physical thread and fabric frames.
The Process Behind the Embroidered Sprites
While previous games like Yoshi's Wooly World and Kirby's Epic Yarn have utilized a woven aesthetic, Attu Games went a step further by physically sewing every frame of their characters. In a prior interview with developer Eva Navratilova, the team explained that the goal was to achieve the feel of Studio Ghibli movies rather than a traditional craft aesthetic.
The creation process requires preparing the animation on a PC, then converting the finished frames into vectors using embroidery software. The developer must manually configure stitch styles, thread colors, angles, and settings. Main character Elise features hundreds of embroidered movement frames, while side characters require dozens, making the overall art creation process roughly three times as long as traditional methods.
Release Status and Player Reception
Following a viral reception online in 2023, the game's release has prompted fresh reactions from players surprised by the physical nature of the animation. The game is currently available on Steam, where it holds an 87% positive user review score days after launch. According to the developers, console ports are scheduled to arrive as soon as possible.
