A new version of the cult-classic isometric adventure Sanitarium is currently in development. Publisher Ziggurat announced that Sanitarium Enhanced is scheduled for release across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo platforms sometime in 2026.
New Features and Improvements
While the original 1998 title focused on the journey of an amnesiac named Max through a surreal, crumbling hospital, this updated release aims to modernize the experience for contemporary players. Key updates include:
- Widescreen Support: Gameplay will now support widescreen resolution rather than being limited to cutscenes.
- Controller Support: The game adds full support for gamepads, expanding its reach beyond traditional mouse-and-keyboard play.
- Hint Mode: An optional hint system has been added to assist players with the game's point-and-click puzzles.
- Extras Gallery: A new section containing behind-the-scenes content and previously cut material.
- Technical Fixes: The developers have addressed unspecified legacy bugs and implemented optimizations for the Steam Deck.
While the existing PC version of the game remains playable on modern hardware—particularly via Steam Deck trackpads—the 2026 release marks the first time the title will officially support face buttons and analog stick navigation across a wider range of hardware.
