Resident Evil 2 has officially become the best-selling title in Capcom's horror franchise. According to Capcom's latest earnings report, the 2019 remake has sold an additional 1.42 million copies, bringing its lifetime sales to 19.75 million.

With this milestone, Resident Evil 2 has finally dethroned Resident Evil 5, which previously held the top spot with 19.01 million copies across its various editions on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Sales Competition at the Top
Resident Evil 2's position at number one faces ongoing pressure from other titles in the catalog. The Resident Evil 4 remake has reached 16.04 million copies sold despite a four-year head start for Resident Evil 2. In the most recent three-month period, Resident Evil 4 sold 2.43 million copies, outpacing Resident Evil 2's sales pace by over 1 million units. Resident Evil Requiem also added 1.14 million copies in the same three-month window.
Franchise Milestone Over Final Fantasy
Driven by these figures, Capcom confirmed that the entire Resident Evil series has reached 213 million copies sold since its debut 30 years ago. This pushes the horror franchise past Final Fantasy, which Square Enix recently reported at 212 million copies sold. Resident Evil now stands as the ninth best-selling game franchise of all time and the largest Japanese game series not published by Nintendo.
