Developers Landfall and Aggro Crab have released Peak's final major content update, titled The Final Ascent, for PC. Alongside the new update, the studios detailed their reasons for concluding development rather than turning the cooperative climbing game into an ongoing live-service project.
What's Included in The Final Ascent Update
The final patch introduces several additions to the game, expanding the available biomes, gear, and secrets:
- Two New Variant Biomes: Gloom features heavy fog, massive trees, mysterious bells, and ominous spikes. The Citadel is a castle-like structure containing swinging spiky balls, secret arrow traps, and timed upward-shooting floor spears.
- Ascent 8: The titular final ascent has been added to the game, though its contents remain a secret for players to discover organically.
- Clown Luggage: A new luggage type featuring wacky items such as a lollipop, cannon, and balloon bunch. These items will no longer appear in standard climber luggage.
- New Gear and Items: Players can now find a jetpack, warp fungus, and a glider across the island.
- Mysterious Statues: New statues connected to the Scoutmaster's original lost troop are hidden across the island for players to locate.
Why Peak Won't Become a Forever Game
Addressing the community in the patch notes, the developers explained their decision to cap development on Peak. According to the studios, they always intended to release a game that felt finished at launch, treating major content additions as extra bonuses.
Due to the title's success, the teams spent significantly more time supporting it than originally planned. However, Landfall and Aggro Crab stated they do not wish for Peak to become a "forever game" bloated by constant additions designed solely to retain player attention. With the final update deployed, both small developer teams plan to transition back to working on their own separate projects.
