Pathogenic, a top-down roguelike shooter, launched on PC on July 16, 2026. Developed by Aberrant Labs and published by Slug Disco, the game tasks players with controlling a lone pathogen as it infects a human host, utilizing a combination of twin-stick combat and biological evolution mechanics.
Core Gameplay and Progression
The game centers on a mix of room-based combat and character evolution. As players defeat enemies, they collect body parts—or organelles—that can be grafted onto their pathogen to modify weapons, movement, and defensive stats. This system allows for significant customization, with the developer including over 120 unique organelles and mutations to facilitate various playstyles.
Progression is handled through two primary systems:
- DNA Leveling: Defeating organisms yields DNA, which acts as a standard level-up currency to unlock mutations like increased attack speed or stamina.
- Organelle Grafting: A dedicated editor lets players swap physical parts on their pathogen to create specialized builds, including combinations that can significantly alter combat effectiveness.
Technical Performance and Compatibility
Pathogenic is built using the open-source Godot Engine. The title is currently Steam Deck Verified and offers native Linux support. While the game is playable with various inputs, it is recommended to use a controller for the twin-stick mechanics.
