Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida has provided insight into the development direction for the game's upcoming expansion, Evercold, while commenting on how he would approach a brand-new online title from scratch.
Scheduled for release in early 2026, Evercold represents a push toward system evolution. Yoshida stated he chose to steer the expansion toward "change" to improve the player experience and ensure the game remains compatible with evolving player lifestyles. This includes specific mechanical overhauls, such as removing cast times for healer attack spells and modifying global cooldown heals to better define the healer role.
Development Philosophy and Future Projects
Yoshida noted that making significant changes to a long-running live service title requires caution to avoid operational instability. He compared the process to driving at high speeds, where sudden maneuvers can lead to accidents. Consequently, these system tweaks are part of a measured, long-term strategy for Final Fantasy 14.
When asked about the possibility of developing a new online project, Yoshida indicated he would take a different path if starting from a clean slate. He noted that in a new live service environment, he would look to challenge himself by implementing entirely new game designs and values rather than iterating on established systems.
