Four months of technical overhauls for Manor Lords have finally migrated from the beta branch to the live build. Developer Slavic Magic has spent this period prioritizing backend stability, opting to pause planned content drops and a trade rework to address systems that had degraded over time. With these improvements now deployed, lead developer Greg Styczeń confirms that the team is ready to move on to fresh content.
Quick Facts
- Update Scope: The seventh major update includes hundreds of lines of balancing, bug fixes, and optimization.
- Pathfinding: A new 'island' system rejects invalid routes, such as paths across rivers without bridges.
- Worker AI: Population behavior is more responsive, with villagers now performing tasks like returning handcarts to sheds when idle.
- Squad Control: Locomotion and collision have been refactored; players can access old squad movement styles by holding the Alt key.
Refining the Medieval Experience
The core of this update focuses on pathfinding, a system that had become strained by stacking inefficiencies. By refactoring character locomotion and collision, the developers aim for smoother overall performance. Beyond navigation, several gameplay adjustments have been implemented to streamline day-to-day management:
- Level-one families: These households no longer consume ale.
- Home fires: Families are only classified as homeless if their house burns down, not simply if it catches fire.
- Manor area: As a temporary fix until town walls are fully implemented, players can now select buildings that are placed within the Manor area.
- Infrastructure: Church boundaries have been expanded to prepare for future levels, and quarries have been increased in size to prevent clipping issues when placed adjacently.
Styczeń acknowledged the frustration regarding the pace of development, noting that the team cannot grow larger without introducing risk. "Please remember that the game has a relatively large audience, which makes even quite obscure bugs ruin people's playthroughs on a daily basis," he stated. "In other words, if it wasn't important, we wouldn't prioritize it."
What Comes Next?
With the backend systems now solidified, the developer has reassured the community that work on new features is ongoing. Styczeń also clarified that any social media polls hosted by the studio regarding game changes are typically focused on low-priority quality-of-life improvements rather than the team's primary development focus. As for the content and features currently in the works, the developer noted they are simply not ready for public release yet.
