Riot Games has officially brought League of Legends back to its roots with the arrival of the new League of Legends Classic mode on the game's public test environment (PTE). The mode offers a significant departure from the current state of the MOBA by rolling back the gameplay experience to reflect the state of the game as it existed in 2013 and prior.
What to Expect in the Classic Mode
The core of the experience lies in its structural changes to the roster and itemization. Players jumping into the test environment will find that the majority of the modern character roster has been removed. In their place, Riot has restored legacy character kits and older item builds that were staples of the game over a decade ago.
For long-time players, this represents a chance to revisit specific mechanical interactions and strategic metas that haven't been viable in years. By stripping away the bloat of modern updates, the mode forces a return to the simplified, high-impact combat loops that defined the early era of the title.
Testing and Implementation
Because the mode is currently limited to the public test environment, these changes are subject to further iteration based on feedback from the player base. The move to restrict the roster while reintroducing historical kits is a notable shift in how the developer is handling the game's long-term evolution, prioritizing a curated nostalgic experience over the standard, ever-expanding roster approach.
Players with access to the PTE can now queue for the mode to test these legacy mechanics, though there is no official word yet on when a wider rollout for the live servers will occur.
