Upgrading Tarstones in Mortal Shell 2 requires a mix of passive XP accumulation and specific material turn-ins at the Tarforge. Because resources are limited, you will need to choose which stones to invest in, as you cannot fully upgrade every item in a single playthrough.
How to Upgrade Tarstones
- Level 1: Equip the desired Tarstone. It will upgrade to level 1 passively as you earn XP.
- Level 2: Once at level 1, visit the Tarforge and spend 100 Coins to upgrade. Note: You must first provide Etching Needles to Franz to access the Tarforge.
- Level 3: Equip your level 2 Tarstone and earn enough XP to unlock the final tier. Return to the Tarforge and upgrade using six Tarcores.
Important Considerations
Before beginning your upgrades, ensure you have located Franz and provided him with the necessary Etching Needles. Without this prerequisite, you cannot access the Tarforge menu required for level 2 and level 3 enhancements.
Because Tarcores are a finite resource throughout a single playthrough, it is recommended that you experiment with different Tarstones before committing your materials. Focus on the stones that best complement your current build to maximize your character's effectiveness.
