Halo: Campaign Evolved is available now for players willing to jump in early, but the remake tells a starkly different story depending on the hardware. While the release looks striking on high-end gaming PCs and current-generation consoles, low-end hardware and handheld gaming PCs face a steep technical uphill battle.

Quick Facts

  • Platform: PC (2026 release)
  • Minimum Requirements: Intel Core i7-10700K and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super
  • Handheld Status: Steam Deck Verified, though performance requires severe visual compromises

Handheld Performance and Settings on Steam Deck and Xbox Ally

Running the remake on portable devices requires dialing settings all the way back. Testing on the Xbox Ally required dropping the resolution to 1280x720, selecting the Very Low preset, and applying Low FSR. Even with these concessions, the game delivers a playable 30 fps with occasional dips into the mid-20s. This narrow performance threshold explains how the title earned its green checkmark for Steam Deck Verified status, though titles have certainly run worse and still passed.

Pushing the hardware this hard carries a steep visual cost. To keep the framerate stable, texture quality drops significantly, and environmental details like vegetation practically vanish. Upscaling at 720p compounds the issue, turning the image into a blurry and static-heavy presentation that strips away much of the remake's intended detail.

Master Chief Collection Remains the Better Handheld Option

For players dedicated to experiencing the original campaign on portable hardware, the newer remake may not be the optimal choice. When examining missions side-by-side, environments in Campaign Evolved appear much flatter and lack the ground vegetation and clarity found in older iterations. During heavy Covenant firefights, enemies in the remake can appear as blurry messes under reduced settings.

By contrast, Halo: The Master Chief Collection runs at a smooth 65 to 70 fps on the Xbox Ally using comparable handheld hardware. Given that the Xbox Ally and the Steam Deck share extremely similar performance baselines, players hoping for a clean portable experience are currently better off sticking with the Master Chief Collection rather than forcing Campaign Evolved onto low-end handhelds.
