Operation Meteorite Prequel Missions and Campaign Remix
The release features Operation Meteorite, a set of three new prequel missions depicting Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson infiltrating a Covenant research vessel one year before the main campaign. These missions introduce Brutes to the experience, complete with Spikers and Brute Plasma Rifles.
Once players collect any three Skulls, they unlock Campaign Remix. This mode allows for replaying missions with randomized parameters, including altered enemy factions, shuffled weapon spawns, and active Skulls.
Expanded Sandbox, Vehicles, and Enemies
The weapon and vehicle lineup sees notable additions throughout the main missions:
- New Weapons: The Energy Sword, Sentinel Beam, Fuel Rod Gun, SMG, and Needle Rifle are added to the main campaign. The Battle Rifle, Brute Plasma Rifle, and Spiker appear exclusively in bonus missions.
- Pilotable Wraiths: Covenant Wraith tanks can now be driven during specific levels, such as Assault on the Control Room. Most vehicles can also be hijacked, though enemies can hijack them right back.
- Equipment Management: Overshields and Active Camo act as Halo 3-style equipment pieces that can be stored and deployed manually via a button press rather than activating on pickup.
- New Foes: Jackal snipers populate various missions, and large Tank Form Flood units from Halo 3 make rare, high-threat appearances.
Modernized Gameplay Mechanics
Several quality-of-life adjustments and modern mechanics alter how players navigate the ring. Master Chief now features a dedicated sprint button and a smart-link aiming system providing roughly 1.4x zoom for weapons like the Magnum and Sniper Rifle. Health kits have been removed in favor of regenerating health for the Chief. Additionally, waypoints and objective markers remain visible on screen to aid navigation.
Level geometry remains mostly faithful to the original, with notable exceptions such as The Library receiving more varied layouts and light bridge mechanics. The Forerunner Warthog cave path has also been streamlined into a continuous route.
Visuals, Audio, and Voice Cast Updates
Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Halo Campaign Evolved delivers photorealistic lighting and textures alongside performance optimizations. Narrative cutscenes and dialogue receive adjustments, featuring tutorial lines added by Cortana and other NPCs, while classic lines like Keyes' ammunition remark have been cut.
Steve Downes and Jen Taylor return to re-record their roles as Master Chief and Cortana, while Captain Keyes and Sergeant Johnson are recast, with Keith Silverstein voicing Keyes and Keston John voicing Johnson. Furthermore, Covenant Elites now speak human languages for various combat barks, reducing the frequency of classic Grunt and Elite vocalizations.
